Aquarist Level I or II (DOE)

Full-time/Part-time: Full-time; weekends, holidays and evenings as required

Department: Living Collections
Reports To: Lead Aquarist

Aquarists are responsible for the husbandry of animals owned by or entrusted to the museum, the appearance and upkeep of live exhibits, enclosures and the associated life support systems, and the support areas related to the animal collection such as the lab and food prep kitchen. Each Aquarist will be assigned a number of primary responsibilities, and all Aquarists are expected to support each other as needed. Experience in life support operations, especially ozone application, will be especially helpful.

Primary Duties

  • Provide daily cleaning and care of assigned exhibits and life support systems.
  • Feed animals according to established feed schedule, recommend changes as necessary.
  • Make daily observations of animals for health assessment and report suspected incidence of disease immediately to the management; collaborate on appropriate therapy.
  • Maintain written records in accordance with established practice and policy.
  • Update/create policies and protocols as required.
  • Monitor and manage water quality in assigned exhibits and holding tanks.
  • Participate in the construction and care of exhibit life support systems, including routine preventative maintenance on equipment including ozone systems.
  • Provide alternate coverage for other Aquarists as assigned.
  • Ensure all husbandry areas are kept clean, organized and hazard free.
  • Report maintenance needs and perform minor maintenance tasks.
  • Provide superb customer service for all visitors.
  • Train and direct interns, volunteers, and Aquarist Aides as assigned.
  • Study reference materials about animals in assigned areas.
  • Calmly and efficiently implement emergency procedures as directed.
  • Work safely with and around potentially hazardous chemicals and dangerous animals.
  • Extended periods of standing and heavy lifting up to 50 lbs.
  • Ensure daily and weekly check sheets are current.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Experience

  • A Bachelor’s degree with an emphasis on biology or related field is preferred.
  • Should have previous exposure to aquariums and/or zoos and a background related to living organisms in a professional setting.
  • Must demonstrate a basic understanding of the operation of the equipment necessary to maintain live exhibits, especially aquatic life support systems.
  • Must demonstrate a basic understanding of the fundamentals of water chemistry and basic analysis of critical water quality parameters.
  • Must possess knowledge and skills for minor carpentry, plumbing, and painting.
  • Must possess strength and endurance to perform the physical demands of all Primary Duties with or without accommodation.
  • Must possess or be able to acquire a valid Iowa, Wisconsin or Illinois driver’s license within 3 months of hire.
  • Must possess SCUBA certification or the ability to obtain certification within 6 months of hire.
  • Ability to interact in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Must learn quickly and be self-motivated to elevate personal skill set.
  • Must possess good decision-making skills to make sound, independent judgments.
  • Must possess good problem-solving skills to identify problems and suggest solutions.
  • Must be able to read, write, and speak the English language.

Part-Time Café Associate

The River’s Edge Café is seeking individuals who are passionate about providing exceptional customer service as Café Associates . The ideal candidate is self-motivated, dependable and a quick learner with restaurant or food service experience. They will possess a strong work ethic, a commitment to teamwork, and a focus on customer service in all circumstances. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: communicating with guests, being familiar with the menu, preparing food, serving food to guests, acting as a cashier, and maintaining a safe and clean kitchen. Individuals should be capable of multi-tasking, lifting up to 50 pounds, and have exceptional knife skills. Part-Time Maintenance

The National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium is seeking candidates for the Part-Time Maintenance position. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: light maintenance, grass cutting, snow removal, cleaning of grounds and facility, help with event set-up, and other duties as assigned. Requires valid driver’s license, ability to stand for prolonged periods of time, stoop, kneel, bend, climb, lift and carry up to 50 pounds, climb a ladder, and occasionally work at heights. High school diploma or equivalent is required. Saturdays and Sundays, with some holidays required.

Part-Time Guest Associate

The National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium is seeking candidates for the Guest Associate Positions. This position is part of a team that works together to provide the best possible experience for every individual visiting the Museums of the Dubuque County Historical Society. An ideal candidate is someone with exceptional service skills, feels comfortable interacting with guests, delivers accurate information to guests, works well on a team, and positively portrays the organization. This position requires working a flexible schedule with weekend and holiday hours.

Primary Duties

  • Provide an exceptional experience for all guests of the DCHS and NMRMA.
  • Interact with guest and assist them in creating their experience.
  • Operate the Point of Sale system and complete all associated paperwork with accuracy.
  • Encourage visitors to experience all the DCHS and NMRMA benefits.
  • Provide accurate information when asked questions.
  • Present the museum positively by maintaining clean and presentable work areas.

Experience

  • Previous customer service and guest interaction.
  • Proficient use of computers and computer systems, or the ability to quickly learn.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Quick decision making under pressure.
  • Operating a cash register and cash handling.
  • Previous sales or upselling experience preferred.
  • Working with guest of all ages and ethnicities.
  • Compliant with the mission of the DCHS and the NMRMA.
